On Wednesday, it was pretty apparent that there would be a strike on Thursday not just at the Mother Baby hospital but at the entire Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. This would affect nursing, medical students, doctors, pharmacy, and most all other departments in the hospital. This also means that it would involved almost everyone at the IU house. The NICU dealt with this by trying to discharge as many patients as possible, preparing mothers, and organizing those who may be allowed in. It seemed that everyone was busier than usual in the entire hospital. The pharmacy girls from Purdue stayed late into the evening changing all pts IV meds to oral so that families would be able to administer them. Nice job girls and everyone else who went above and beyond.
On Thursday, we were asked not to go to the hospital for our own safety. The nurses said they would not want us stoned or hurt in any way. It was very hard not going when you know pts are there in need. We were told that nurse managers were able to go, so that made me feel a little better knowing someone could give meds. We did drive by the hospital and saw picketing, news cameras, and the street blocked off. Please pray for the issues surrounding this strike.
