Riley Mother Baby Hospital

We have just finished our 3rd day of teaching for six of the NICU nurses. The classes have been going really well. They are very grateful for the knowledge they are learning. It is challenging at times because they desire to have more equipment such as ventilators but the NICU does not have the capability to run these at this time. There are so many similarities in the NICU here and at home, yet so many differences at the same time. It is not uncommon for the nurse/pt ratio to be 1/20, they don't do BP's, there was a baby on a warmer with a missing side rail, the mothers have to take their shoes off before entering, and there were two babies sharing one bili light (at least there were bulbs for it), however, the mothers stay in the hospital and help with each feeding, they do the baby's laundry, and lunch is brought to the nurses during their shift. Im excited to begin working whole shifts with these nurses at the bedside. Even if we can make a small difference in their NICU, I believe it will be a huge blessing to them.
